What to expect when you contact a forensic document examiner or specialist
- Do not send any documents until requested. Your first inquiry should be general as to the type of work needed and the names of the parties involved so a conflicts check may be run.
- To retain the expert, a retainer payment and signed agreement is generally required.
- If the case involves a signature or handwriting question, gather several original documents with signatures (or handwriting, as applicable) dated close in time to the questioned document. Copies are acceptable, but original documents are preferred.
- For the client's protection, the attorney should be the primary contact with the document expert.
- See our FAQ page for more general questions.
