Although often known as handwriting experts, the work of a forensic document examiner involves much more than the examination and comparison of handwriting.

Below is a partial list of the types of examinations forensic document examiners can perform:

  • Examination and comparison of handwriting, hand printing, and signatures.
  • Examination and comparison of ink on documents.
  • The detection of forgery.
  • Erased, altered, and obliterated entries on documents.
  • Paper.
  • Computer-printed, typewritten, faxed, and photocopied documents.
  • Development and examination of indented writing images.
  • Counterfeit and commercially printed documents.

Forensic experts will also:
  • Prepare court demonstration material (charts, PowerPoint presentations, etc.).
  • Provide court testimony as an expert witness.
