WHAT A FORENSIC DOCUMENT
EXAMINER CAN DO

Thomas W. Vastrick
Forensic Document Examiner

A forensic document examiner is often referred to as a handwriting examiner or handwriting expert. Unfortunately, this name suggests that handwriting examinations are all we do. Forensic document examiners scrutinize the entire document and may actually discover evidence that was entirely overlooked until then.

Some of the more common types of examinations conducted include the following:

  • Signatures
  • Handwriting and Hand Printing
  • Anonymous Notes
  • Restoration of Obliterated Entries
  • Restoration of Erased Entries
  • Indented writings
  • Counterfeit Detection
  • Classification and Identification of Typewriters
  • Classification and Identification of Copiers
  • Classification and Identification of Fax Machines
  • Classification and Identification of Checkwriters
  • Classification and Identification of Computer Printers
  • Transportation and Restoration of Charred or Water-Soaked Documents
  • Nondestructive Ink and Paper analyses
  • Detection of Page Replacement
