CERTIFICATION

Thomas W. Vastrick
Forensic Document Examiner

The easiest way to guarantee selection of a well-trained, experienced forensic document examiner is to select one of the many examiners certified by the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners (ABFDE). Don’t be fooled by other “boards” that may use fancy names or even names similar to the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners.

The American Board of Forensic Document Examiners is the only certification board recognized by all federal law enforcement agencies, most state law enforcement agencies and by leading examiners in private practice all across North America.

There are currently numerous law enforcement agencies which require certification by the ABFDE for hiring purposes. In addition, numerous courts have recognized ABFDE certification as a basis for voir dire qualification while refusing to accept “certification” from other organizations.

To become a Diplomate of the ABFDE one must complete the following:
  • A full-time, two-year training program conducted in person and by a laboratory or training instructor approved by the Board
  • A baccalaureate degree in the sciences, criminal justice, criminology or other related field
  • Letters of recommendation from three Diplomates
  • Two years of experience beyond the training program
  • Successful completion of a three-part test which includes a series of practical problems, a written test and a peer panel review
  • A Diplomate must maintain their certification by active participation in research organizations, writing research papers of merit, and attending workshops or other such activities that demonstrate an active role in keeping up with current trends and technology.
