THIS PUBLICATION
>From the 1930’s until its final resolution in the
International Court of Justice in 2001, a border dispute between the Persian
Gulf nations of Bahrain and Qatar simmered, and sometimes boiled over. The
turbulent history of the disputed land and marine territory included among its
players the Ottoman and British Empires, the United States, and virtually all of
the countries of the Arabian Gulf. It was an historical tableau that included
oil, territorial, and cultural politics within the context of the
evolving national identities of the Gulf states.
When the merits phase of
the ICJ case began in 1996, Bahrain identified 82 forged documents which had
been submitted to the Court by Qatar. This publication brings together the
September 1997, December 1997 and March 1998 submissions by Bahrain's experts to
the International Court regarding these forged documents. This publication
serves to record for historians, and for the legal and forensic communities, all
of the work carried out in order to identify and document these
forgeries.
